Favorite Races: XC would have to be all of the Michaux series. It’s a tough choice for DH, but I think I might have to go with the Pro course at Snowshoe WVA. As for Dual slalom, any course built by Mike Hartlove of Racers Edge and the Mid Atlantic Cup.
Bikes: Favorite bike-Canondale Prophet. DH-Specialized Demo 8, Road-Pinarello lugged steel, and many others.
2006 Goals: In the words of Yoda, Jedi master, to Skywalker “you must unlearn what you have learned”, and so must I if I am to take it to the next level.
Riding Highlights: Their have been so many amaizing rides over the years. The 6hr ride down from the La Sals Mtns over looking Moab, into the desert and slick rock of valley.
Racing Highlights: Winning the DH in expert class at both Snowshoe and Mt Snow Nationals in 2004; Winner Mid Atlantic Cup Expert 2004, Winner Mid Atlantic Cup 2005 Pro, 16th Pro Dual Slalom Deer Valley National 2005.

Race Report: 12 Hours of Lodi Farms 2006
Race Report: 12 Hours of Lodi Farms 2006
by Joel Gwadz
The soreness from the race at Lodi Farms is gone, but the poison ivy still remails. Before the itching leaves me along with the memories I will try to get out a few words…
As per usual, I was not well prepared for this event. The weekend prior after the race at Greenbriar I had the opportunity to snag fellow DCMTB fast guy Kent Baake. But for some reason I held out. As I wanted to try and find another Clydesdale on a Single Speed. By Monday night Kent was drafted by another team, while I was till dreaming about this Clydesdale on a Single Speed. Somehow I managed to maintain this dream until just hours before race time as I arrived at Lodi Farms to meet up with my friend and rival, fellow Clydesdale, Chris Redlack.
After a short social loop around the campground with Chris I resigned myself to racing Duo. I had tried to psych myself up for this in the days leading up to the event. While packing earlier that day I was conviced enough that Duo was my destiny that I packed away enough gear for 6 laps; 6 fresh shorts, 6 City Bikes shirts, an assortment of socks…. gloves, shoes, glasses and helmet would have to be reused. At the registration table we were asked to present our names…. being more literal than creative I called us what we are… RIVALS AND FRIENDS. We walked back to the camp and got ready to race. (more…)

Update: Our plan is to head up to Camp Roosevelt on Saturday morning and start the SkyMass ride no later than 11AM from Camp Roosevelt. If you want to join us, please be there in time to ride by 11. We will then do Kennedy Peak on Sunday if the weather permits. Feel free to just join us for SkyMass is you don’t want to do a whole weekend. You could also just join us for Kennedy Peak by meeting us at Camp Roosevelt around 9 or so on Sunday. But if the weather forecast gets much worse for Sunday, the ride might not happen, and I will have no way of contacting anyone to let them know.
If you are thinking of coming on one or both rides, please let me know via email by 10 PM tonight (Friday). I can get you directions if you need them.

Description: Join Mike, Jonathan and me at Camp Roosevelt in George Washington National Forest for a biking weekend. Our plan is to ride Kennedy Peak on Saturday and SkyMass on Sunday. We will base both rides out of Camp Roosevelt, a fairly rustic campground in George Washington National Forest. If the campground fills up, there are lots of backcountry sites along the fire roads in the area as well. But if folks come in on Friday night or early Saturday, we should be able to get at least a couple of campsites at Camp Roosevelt.
Following SkyMass on Sunday we plan to grill some food up before heading back to the DC area. (And of course we will be cooking up something on Saturday night as well.) We will have a couple of grills, so bring along some grillable items. We will have some to share as well.
I will post directions to Camp Roosevelt later, as well as better ride descriptions.
Kennedy Peak: About 14 miles, beginning with a road climb uphill, then onto a single track ridge, some good rock gardens along the ridge, then a fun downhill back to the road, then along the road back to Camp Roosevelt. If people want more riding after that, then another trip up the road climb to come down a “fun” downhill Mike has been wanting to try for years. For the really adventurous, if it is now open, Kennedy Peak can be combined with Duncan Hollow for an epic mtb ride (there was a controlled burn in Duncan Hollow a year or so ago, so I am not sure it is open).
SkyMass: this road ride incorporates Skyline Drive and Massanutten. The full ride will be about 90 miles, leaving and returning to Camp Roosevelt, though some of us (me, anyway) will likely drive and only ride Skyline and do something more in the 60 mile range. Regardless of length, it will incorporate a lot of climbing and descending. Please note that there is an entry fee of $8 for Skyline Drive.

Poolesville Pain

Well you got the jist from Eric’s and Chris’s reports. Attacked, decided to stick it out - a move that was a lap too early and proved fruitless. Lesson learned. Sat up, but when two riders bridged decided to stuff myself back into the hurt locker. Things were looking good, especially since one of my break companions was NCVC and there were 12 more back in the pack, presumably working for him. When he flatted, the game was up. My other break partner just had more energy and pulled away slowly after the dirt section. In hindsight I should have buried myself and stayed on his wheel….because he won. Still pisses me off. Oh well. That’s racing - lesson learned. Thanks to Eric and Judd for helping launch me and suffering to keep me away - for whatever it was worth - at least the majority of other roadies think were f*ing crazy - especially with the Lodi double up…
