Capital Cross

This was the final race of the season for most of the team. DCMTB / CityBikes had a good turnout at the race.
Marc Gwadz coming off his Marbra champinionship win where he was 1st for the Mabra series 35+ and 1st in the DC/Maryland in his age group. Marc was racing masters, but with the MAC confrence being UCI most of the masters that usual race elite raced in the regular Elite masters catagory. Marc still had a solid race, but one of his mabra rivals got the best of him again. From Marc,“I was in a 3 person group with berni shiao- we were able first to distance ourselves from a large chasing group (Chris scott, Roger Masse, Randle Root, etc), then on the last lap I made a push to drop the others as we hit the berm before the dam. Mike Birner fell off the pace but Berni Shiao counter-attacked got a couple second gap on me with 1/4 th lap to go and held it the line.” Chris Clarke was racing the Masters B race with Mark Drajem. Mark and Chris both road some smooth races and were competitive out on the circuit. Chris felt his legs were a little sluggish and he summed it with,“It’s hard to believe I could get so old without realizing I was so slow.” Ilanna Knopf was able to withstand the cold and finish Top 10 in the women’s B field. In the Mens C race there was the DCMTB / CityBikes Trio of Loren Mcwethy, Kent Baake, and Darren Biggs they had all registered the day of so had to start at the back in about 60th position. There were three different stories brewing there, Kent riding the mt. bike with cross tires doing his first CX race, Loren the young buck coming into form and riding his new $$$ cross bike, and Darren deciding to race at the last minute on pure skill, not his form. Kent was the only racer in the C field to go over the log on the run up. Doing that got the crowd fired up, so he went for broke and tried to bunny hop the barriers which wasn’t as successful but got the crowd fired up none the less and he achieved his goal of having a good time. Darren got a fast start and Loren was able to bridge to him and the DCMTB / CityBikes Duo was able to drop two pursuing riders. In the finishing straight Loren was about 200yds in front of Darren, and Darren was able to catch Loren at the line. Some might say Darren punked him, but Darren believes he gave Loren a lesson on always finishing strong even when you think you got the gap :-)

Tacchino Ciclicross

This past weekend the DCMTB \ CityBikes team went out to Leesburg to challenge the other local teams in some cross racing. The Tacchino Ciclicross race course is unlike any other in the area, with no pavement and some longer hills makes it a power course. The coarse felt faster this year with our over all dry conditions.

Marc Gwadz who had raced on Sat. at the Wayne Scott “not dead” memorial had an ok race on Sat. - with all the turns it was hard for Marc to tell how good his legs were. Marc put in a good effort and ended up 7th in Elite masters, 4th in the 35+ subgroup in a pretty tough field. The following day at the Tacchino Ciclicross Marc got real good start in the fast elite field- w/ Jeremiah Bishop, Sundt, Greg Whittwer stacking the men’s field. Gunnar always flies off the start line, but this time he biffed at the early set of barriers. he took out someone behind him- who fell right in front of me- I slowly wrangled past him as a bunch of guys flew by. I was still fairly far up in the pack, but got passed by a fair number of people as the laps wore on. Gunnar got passed me then dropped me. and root reeled me, sat on my wheel for a while, then slowly dropped me. I was riding pretty good, but my legs probably weren’t 100% after a couple weeks of spotty training and a head cold. late in the race. I was able to pass a few tiring A riders, and fought to keep a gap on chris mcgill, who kept yo-yo-ing up on the long climb then losing ground onthe twisty top sections. Marc was third in Elite Masters, but Gunnar and Root are in the 45+ subgroup so he picked up a lot of pts in the 35+ series.

Mike Scardaville, Matt Donahue raced the “killer B’s” and had constrasting days. Mike seemed to be enjoying himself on the course and seemed to be staying nice and consistant out on the course. Matt went out a little quicker and I think all his time preparing for the DC-CX took its toll on him with him being in the pain cave for most of his ride. Mark Drajem raced in the Masters B race and really rode a consistant tempo was able to hold off people trying to catch up to him. Illana Knopf worked like an animal out there and in her own words”it was hard, that’s all! :)” Jake Danoff once again said forget about those small junior fields and raced with the CAT 4’s and said that he started out pretty good but after 2 laps he was starting to feel it. Jake was able to finish mid pack which is a good result. Darren Biggs was looking forward to the race, and was able to be the prime attraction for the race announcer, where Darren was chasing the two leaders for the whole race, but ended up placing 3rd in front of a charging Ryan Bannon from Bike Lane. For more details on Darren’s CAT 4 race check his blog The Bike and More.

Weston Schempf and Betsy Shogren take top honors at DCCX

From DC-CX

Weston Schempf of C3-Sollay.com and Betsy Shogren of FORT Factory Team pulled away from their top competitors early to ride to commanding victories in the inaugural DCCX Cyclocross Race presented by DCMTB/City Bikes in Washington, D.C.
The event, held on the grounds of the Armed Forces Retirement Home, was the first-ever cyclocross race held in the nation’s capital, and — with a crystalline fall day as an added draw — the race had a full field of 225 riders, including a packed CAT 4/beginners race with more than 80 riders.
The race was promoted by the DC Mountain Bike Team with the assistance of team sponsors City Bikes, Metro Gutter and Home Services, Temperance Hall and Whole Foods Market - P Street. Specific race sponsors included Sticky Fingers Bakery, Sonoma Restaurant and Wine Bar, DrinkMore Water, Louis Garneau, WTB, Serfas, Surly and Salsa.
The course, which was muddied up by three days of rain in the days before the race, included a wide mix of rooted, swooping curves, open road, two sets of tricky barriers and a Paris-Roubaix style brick section. Roadies called it a mountain bikers’ course because of the rough, rooted sections; mountain bikers wondered why their competitors hung on their wheel during the brutal windy, road section. Everyone was heard praising the course design.
“Props to whoever put it together,” Schempf said. “There was a lot of good rhythm to it.”
Schempf, from Sinking Spring, Pennsylvania, led the field of 17 top riders by the time the field hit the first uphill barrier section and said after that he knew the race was his to lose. No one else had a chance: Schempf had his car, with his bikes in it, towed the night before. He had to scramble in just the few hours before the race to recover his bikes (and car) and make his way to the venue.
“I was a little angry,” Schempf said. “I decided to take it out on the course.”
Blair Saunders of Henry’s Bikes led a group of four riders who chased Schempf for much of the race. Saunders tried in vain to get some help to lead the effort to work the way back up to Schempf, whose lead exceeded one minute at halfway into the hour-long race. Saunders finally attacked his group and got clear for second place.
The most dramatic finish in the race came from Bethesda’s own Nick Bax, a member of the junior national road team. Bax started at the back of the field and was shaky around some of the tight, technical turns. But as the race went on he picked better lines — and picked off riders ahead of him. With less than a half a lap to go, Bax put on a charge, and was able to nip Patrick Engleman at the line to take fifth place and a podium position.
“He might have won this race if it lasted another 30 minutes,” announcer Shawn “Bega” Blumenfeld told the crowd, which at that point was enjoying the free beer offered by Sonoma.
In the women’s race Shogren, from Morgantown, West Virginia, took off with Jessica Hill from the start, and then built a lead after Hill had technical problems. She smoothly built up a big lead, wide enough that she could switch to her single-speed pit bike after a few laps.
For Shogren, the DCCX event was about more than just racing: She hadn’t visited Washington before and spent Saturday touring the historic monuments with husband and third-place finisher Gunnar Shogren on their bikes.
The earlier races had bigger fields and lots of drama. Russell Langley, a professional with Battley Harley Davidson, throttled the B field and then pledged Blumenfeld — and the crowd — that he would race with the A riders next week.
In the Masters race, course designer Marc Gwadz moved out to an early lead but was slowly roped in by Randall Root and Bernie Shiao. Gwadz held on with the Root and Shiao and then made a dramatic sprint in what he thought was the last lap. It wasn’t, and Shiao and Root, who are both 45+ riders, then moved out to win the race in that order.
In the packed C Race Ryan Bannon used his mountain biking skill to move out to an early lead. Steve Wall and Matt Parse put on the chase and took the lead. Parse of Route 1 Velo held out for the victory, and Wall faded to fifth - one place behind Bannon - after a flat tire.
Race director Matt Donahue lives near the Armed Forces Retirement Home, and approached the government-sponsored retirement home about using the grounds for the race. Race proceeds will be donated to benefit the veterans at the AFRH. One official donated his daily salary to the veterans.

IRONCROSS V

The Number 32

This past weekend Mark Drajem in his first race as a DCMTB/City Bikes rider and and Darren Biggs represented at Iron Cross V. The race is getting bigger every year with over 200 racers doing the race this year. This race is the SM100 of Cyclocross, with paved road, singletrak, and gravel roads. Mark had done the race before and was able to improve on his last years time by more then 25 minutes! Darren had never done the race, and guessed that he would finish under 5 hours. After the dust had settled Mark and Darren both ended up in the same place in their age classes. If you would like get a more indepth view of the race check Darren’s blog.

Monster Mash

The DCMTB \ CityBikes team came and had a good showing at the Monster Mash.

Monster Mash 2007

Hagarstown Breast Cancer Awareness CX.

By Marc and Darren
Stop 3 in the dusty, sweltering MABRA cross series took us to Hagerstown
for the breast cancer awareness CX.
http://www.midatlanticcross.info/Results/2007/BCA.htm
The fields sizes were a bit more manageable but still healthy in the 3rd
of 7 MABRA races. The course had a number of 180 deg turns, a lot of
off-camber, and a rideable sandy section.

Marc and Chris stepped up and raced the elite 1,2 race

With Darren doing his second ever cross race, the CAT 4 race

Marc did very really well, and actually paced himself on target to pass some really fast guys that he doesn’t usually beat. Marc was thriving in the heat better then others. All the racers looked haggard, Marc seemed not to get slower as the race progressed, but kept a consistent pace. Marc ended up finishing in 10th place, that being 1st for the masters’ A class. Chris was hanging strong and gave a couple of smiles so he was at least enjoying himself out there. Chris was able to pass a couple of folks as to get 7th in 35+ , 11th in 35/45.
From Marc’s Prospective during the race:

“as Randy approached I thought: “the inevitable”- randy is super strong, but also
famous for a weak start, so I am used to him passing me once the race
settles down. I made some effort to keep up with randy, but conscious of
the 60 minute duration don’t want to overdo it. We changed the lead a
few times and found ourselves moving up on Gunnar, who seemed to pick it
up when we caught him. I made a commitment to try to stay with those
guys. at first i wasn’t sure if I’d be able to hang, but I got the sense
I was stronger at a couple power sections- in particular the steep
ride up, where they were slow to re-accelerate after the hill; and the
uphill barrier run. With about 3 laps to go I was able to work past my
riding mates. First on the road, randy dropped of Gunnar’s wheel, and
rather than risk getting gapped, I went around and hung with Gunnar.
Then when Gunnar and I hit the running section together I was able to
accelerate past him, and Gunnar cheered me on with “way to go, Joel’s
Brother!”.

Darren did his second cross race and proved that he still had some late season form from all the biking he has done this year. He had the City bikes name get called over the speaker system multiple times, and even had rival team members cheering for him. Darren started fast, and was able to hang on for a fourth place finish.

From Darren’s Prospective during the race:

I think after one lap I was in 3rd place. I got on to Matt’s wheel who rides for capital hill bikes I have ridden with him before so I know his ability. I am riding with him and I find out we are 1,2 so I was pretty stoked. We get on this fast downhill section, and his tire came flying off his wheel. So then I was in 1st place, this was short lived, I then started loosing ground to the other guys and was passed by several people. I then rode in no man’s land for the rest of the race, and was able to pull off a 4th place. I was happy with the result considering it was my second cross race, and my pre-race predictions was to finish in the top 1/3 and my goal was a top 10 finish.

Charm City Cyclocross Race 2007

Charm City with the kidsCharm City with the kids

It seems like forever since I lined up and race with the Masters Bs at Charm City in September… but it was not forever… it was not even a month ago.
No time to look back because it is time to forward.

The 2007 Shenandoah Mountain 100

The team is slowly recovering from a very hard day out at the Shenandoah Mountain 100. We had some great performances at the race ranging from new member Darren Biggs’ amazing 9:35 in his first SM100 to 16 year old Jake Danoff who finished his first 100 in 13:07. Eric Welp broke the 10 hour barrier at 9:43, Matt Donahue set a new personal record at 10:17, and Mike Scardaville finally shook off his odd-year curse and finished in 12:17.

Here’s How the Team Did:

What’s in the cards for the rest of the year? Well, the 24 Hour team is heading out to Landahl next weekend for a final showdown with Athens Wrecking Crew for the Granny Gear National Points Series Title and cyclocross season is just around the corner with Charm City kicking off the MABRA series in Baltimore. Stay tuned for more news on Landahl, Cyclocross, and DCCX.
