DCMTB wins EX2’s Day of Endurance

September 20th, 2008

Tom Vaughn and Lynne Oliver represented DCMTB at EX2’s inaugural Day of Endurance. Not only did they win the coed duo class in the 6 hour MTB race, they beat all the duo teams for 3rd overall. Lynne is especial happy to have beaten all the boys, while Tom was just happy to have raced having bruised the heck out of his ribs while preriding the day before.

The course at Rocky Gap State Park was like two courses in one; one section climbed up into Gambril-like rock gardens with a screaming descent back to the mostly smooth and fast lakeside section. There was also some very Lodi-like twisty-turny sections as well, making it a varied and fun course. Jim Harman of EX2 said everybody loved the course and will be doing it again next year.

Thanks to Jim and everybody at EX2 for an expertly run race and thanks to our sponsors: City Bikes, Merkle, Whole Foods P Street, Continuum Energy Solutions, Serfas, SRAM, The Looking Glass Lounge and WTB.

Weston Schempf and Betsy Shogren take top honors at DCCX

October 29th, 2007
From DC-CX

Weston Schempf of C3-Sollay.com and Betsy Shogren of FORT Factory Team pulled away from their top competitors early to ride to commanding victories in the inaugural DCCX Cyclocross Race presented by DCMTB/City Bikes in Washington, D.C.
The event, held on the grounds of the Armed Forces Retirement Home, was the first-ever cyclocross race held in the nation’s capital, and — with a crystalline fall day as an added draw — the race had a full field of 225 riders, including a packed CAT 4/beginners race with more than 80 riders.
The race was promoted by the DC Mountain Bike Team with the assistance of team sponsors City Bikes, Metro Gutter and Home Services, Temperance Hall and Whole Foods Market – P Street. Specific race sponsors included Sticky Fingers Bakery, Sonoma Restaurant and Wine Bar, DrinkMore Water, Louis Garneau, WTB, Serfas, Surly and Salsa.
The course, which was muddied up by three days of rain in the days before the race, included a wide mix of rooted, swooping curves, open road, two sets of tricky barriers and a Paris-Roubaix style brick section. Roadies called it a mountain bikers’ course because of the rough, rooted sections; mountain bikers wondered why their competitors hung on their wheel during the brutal windy, road section. Everyone was heard praising the course design.
“Props to whoever put it together,” Schempf said. “There was a lot of good rhythm to it.”
Schempf, from Sinking Spring, Pennsylvania, led the field of 17 top riders by the time the field hit the first uphill barrier section and said after that he knew the race was his to lose. No one else had a chance: Schempf had his car, with his bikes in it, towed the night before. He had to scramble in just the few hours before the race to recover his bikes (and car) and make his way to the venue.
“I was a little angry,” Schempf said. “I decided to take it out on the course.”
Blair Saunders of Henry’s Bikes led a group of four riders who chased Schempf for much of the race. Saunders tried in vain to get some help to lead the effort to work the way back up to Schempf, whose lead exceeded one minute at halfway into the hour-long race. Saunders finally attacked his group and got clear for second place.
The most dramatic finish in the race came from Bethesda’s own Nick Bax, a member of the junior national road team. Bax started at the back of the field and was shaky around some of the tight, technical turns. But as the race went on he picked better lines — and picked off riders ahead of him. With less than a half a lap to go, Bax put on a charge, and was able to nip Patrick Engleman at the line to take fifth place and a podium position.
“He might have won this race if it lasted another 30 minutes,” announcer Shawn “Bega” Blumenfeld told the crowd, which at that point was enjoying the free beer offered by Sonoma.
In the women’s race Shogren, from Morgantown, West Virginia, took off with Jessica Hill from the start, and then built a lead after Hill had technical problems. She smoothly built up a big lead, wide enough that she could switch to her single-speed pit bike after a few laps.
For Shogren, the DCCX event was about more than just racing: She hadn’t visited Washington before and spent Saturday touring the historic monuments with husband and third-place finisher Gunnar Shogren on their bikes.
The earlier races had bigger fields and lots of drama. Russell Langley, a professional with Battley Harley Davidson, throttled the B field and then pledged Blumenfeld — and the crowd — that he would race with the A riders next week.
In the Masters race, course designer Marc Gwadz moved out to an early lead but was slowly roped in by Randall Root and Bernie Shiao. Gwadz held on with the Root and Shiao and then made a dramatic sprint in what he thought was the last lap. It wasn’t, and Shiao and Root, who are both 45+ riders, then moved out to win the race in that order.
In the packed C Race Ryan Bannon used his mountain biking skill to move out to an early lead. Steve Wall and Matt Parse put on the chase and took the lead. Parse of Route 1 Velo held out for the victory, and Wall faded to fifth – one place behind Bannon – after a flat tire.
Race director Matt Donahue lives near the Armed Forces Retirement Home, and approached the government-sponsored retirement home about using the grounds for the race. Race proceeds will be donated to benefit the veterans at the AFRH. One official donated his daily salary to the veterans.

Tom Vaughn 2007

12 hours of Lodi

May 7th, 2007

by Tom Vaughn

It rained steadily right up to the start time of 12 midnight. Mike K, Jonathon and I all declined to pre-ride, since a dry pair of shorts was deemed more valuable than any knowledge we could acquire of the undoubtedly slimy course.

We were the only expert team, but agreed we’d keep motivated by racing for overall against the single-speeders, of which there were many strong teams.  Less than an hour before the start, however, we found another expert team had signed up!

As it turned out, the course was not that bad.  Treacherous in some places, but the climbs and fast tempo sections were all in generally good shape.  We each did two night laps in a row, which worked well for this event.  On my 2-4AM shift, I saw the rain clouds scatter and moon and stars come out.  I knew we would be in for better conditions and a good race.  A strong wind came with the sun and soon the course was mostly dry and tacky.

We all put in solid lap times, but the other expert team was ahead of us from the start, at one point by 37 minutes!  We kept trying, however, and after Mike finished a fast lap minutes before 12 noon, I went out for the last lap.  I didn’t know it at the time, but I passed the other expert rider 5 minutes into my lap.  He actually stopped to let me pass, so he was either spent or did not realize we were going to get in another lap just under the wire.  Either way, his mistake, and I arrived at the start/finish to find DCMTB/City Bikes in 1st place.   A fantastic upset, this victory was especially sweet for me as this was my first expert class race as well.

Thanks to Mike K and Jonathon for being great teammates! Thanks to all our sponsors, especially Whole Foods P Street for the food!

Terror of Teaberry Race Report

September 27th, 2006

by Tom Vaughn

Conditions were wet with a 60% chance of strong thunderstorms race day. I was in 2nd place for the series, however, so I had to go. It wasn’t that bad in the opening sections. A little mud, no puddles, no thunderstorms forecast until the afternoon, just drizzle.

I got a great start and built a pretty good gap on the field in 3rd with the leader, Neil Sapp, in view all the time.We finished the first big hill and I saw the single track ahead. I passed number two just as we come over the rise and into the single track. All of a sudden, there’s a huge gulley with loose watermelon-sized rocks beneath my wheels. In my peripheral vision, I see Neil and number two go down. I manage to stay on the bike and ride through. I eventually come to the road and loop back to the start area, ready for the first big descent. I look back down the road and don’t see anybody. I’m in first by a sizable margin!

Back onto the single track and coming by the start-area crowd, my front tire flats. A bit of background here: I Stans-converted my rear wheel after losing a podium slot at the CM dirt crit due to a flat. I haven’t done the front tire yet because I NEVER get flats in front. Well, there’s a first time for everything. I get the flat fixed and think I can still catch up. So I fly down the hill and get another flat in the front. Argh! I have a second tube, but my race is obviously done.

By the time I’ve got the bike back together the juniors, who started last, are passing me. I resign myself to taking the downhills conservatively and trying to make up time elsewhere. Unfortunately, the effects of the recent rain start making themselves known. The rocks are coated in slime and its very difficult to stay on a line. I end up running and carrying my bike more than I ever have on a ride, much less a race!

I finish in 2:53:09 for 23nd place or something. I left thinking I’d lost the series placement. I find out later that I still took 2nd in the series by about the same margin going into it. I guess everybody else had a bad race too!
